About Us

The National Ice Carving Association (NICA)was formed in 1987. NICA is a Not-for-Profit Organization that continually works at promoting the Art of Ice Carving through increasing public awareness and encouraging ongoing education for its members. The association set up 10 goals in order to improve this delightful and creative art form. They are as follows:•To create public awareness of Ice Carving as an art form.
•To encourage the use of Ice Sculpture as a marketing tools
•To provide a calendar of upcoming sculpting events across the country as well as assist in promoting new events.
•To offer training to students as well as continuing education for professionals via video tapes, seminars and articles.
•To develop safety standards.
•To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and techniques.
•To form a network of Ice Sculptors and encourage fellowship among them.
•To develop standardized judging criteria to be used at all NICA sanctioned events.
•To provide our members with information on tools and other related products.
•To select individuals and/or teams to represent the United States in international competitions.

These goals provide the framework for NICA to operate successfully. Membership has grown from 12 to over 600 during the past 20 years. NICA is proud to provide services and information to its members and sponsors. Additionally, some sponsors who have chosen to have NICA sanctioned ice sculpting events include Perrier, Proctor & Gamble, Sysco Foodservice, American Express, Southwest Airlines, Anheuser – Busch, Miller Beer and Stolichnaya.

WHAT DOES NICA DO?
The purpose of the National Ice Carving Association is to promote the art of ice sculpture through education, competitions, standardized judging and exhibitions. NICA sanctions ice carving exhibitions and competitions throughout the United States.

WHY SHOULD I BECOME A MEMBER OF NICA?
NICA is the only professional organization for the ice carving industry in the United States. In addition to judging certification, sanctioned competitions and demonstrations, the NICA newsletter provides up-to-date information on ice carving events and new products. NICA offers a line of communication for people to meet, learn and enjoy the growing art and sport of ice carving and ice sculpture. NICA members can participate in all NICA sanctioned events and competitive tournaments. NICA also represents the United States at international ice events. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED IN NICA ACTIVITIES LOCAL TO MY AREA?
Local chapters of NICA are now being organized to provide activities for ice sculpture enthusiasts. Production of an annual singles competition that qualifies the best regional ice carvers for the National Ice Carving Championships, educational seminars, meetings, fund raising activities and demonstrations are all activities in which a local chapter can become involved.

WHY ARE NICA SANCTIONED EVENTS UNIQUE?
Only NICA can offer standardized judging and rules, enabling competitors throughout the country to be assured of fair, precise rulings designed specifically for ice carving events.

HOW ARE NICA SANCTIONED ICE CARVINGS JUDGED?
NICA competitions are judged on the basis of a uniform set of criteria developed and reviewed annually by the National Ice Carving Association’s Board of Directors. Standards include: design and composition, creativity, overall impression and technical skill. All judges of NICA sanctioned events must first be certified by the NICA Judging Committee. Judging applications are available to all members.
