Spider Two Blocks

 


Procedure:

  1. 1. Cut apart block 1 with spider and components.  Place in dry ice box.

  2. 2.  Split block 2 into two 5” slabs.  Cut pieces A - G.

  3. 3.  Freeze pieces A B C together so it can easily stand on its own with a curve from the top view.

  4. 4.  Freeze D E on top with the pieces angle backward creating a cupped shape.

  5. 5.  Freeze F G on to D E angle them further back.  You will have a partial dome shap. 

  6. 6.  Attache templates and cut out web leaving the ice full depth where the spider will be frozen on.

  7. 7.  Cover web and dry ice to keep chilled.

  8. 8.  Carve spider body and freeze on to web.

  9. 9.  Carve legs and attach to spider body.

  10. 10.  Clean.

  11. 11.  Go back over the spider to blend the legs into the body.

  12. 12.  Go back over the web and make the tops and sides of the web very delicate looking.

  13. 13.  Re-clean

Fact:

This sculpture was designed by Greg Butauski for apprentice Paul Ray who scored a Silver medal with this designed as a two block sculpture for the NICC.  The title was “The Patient Hunter”.

Note:

This design has 14 pieces.  The web is built on a curve from both the top view as well as the side view.  There were many complex seams that added dimension and depth to this sculpture.
